The Scout Oath - From Memory

The Arrow of Light Adventure, Scouting Adventure, has us repeating from memory the Scout Oath.

Many moons ago, I was a Cub Scout. But, back then we had the Cub Scout Promise. It was not until recently with my own children being in Cub Scouts that we no longer recite the Cub Scout Promise, but recite the Scout Oath. Having all sectors of BSA on the same oath is awesome. There is a sense of unity between Cubs, Scouts, and Venturing.

As you go through the ranks in Cub Scouts, you have probably heard the Scout Oath too many times to count. This is great! Hearing it along with reciting it for all this time will make it easier for you to recite the oath from memory. The Oath can be broken down in to five sections: God, Country, Scout Law, Other People, and Yourself.

If it helps, memorize only one section at a time starting with the beginning.

On my Honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

Eventually you will have the Scout Oath become a part of your mind and your heart for ever. And when the time comes that you have not been a youth member for over 25 years… the words and feelings will still roll off your tongue as if you were still in your patrol meetings.
