Ziploc Ice Cream

ZipLoc+Ice+Cream.jpg

We are in the middle of an extremely hot summer this year, and what better to cool us down than some Ice Cream! We all scream for Ice Cream!

Getting ice cream to not melt in the camp cooler can be a challenge. Dry ice works very well, but I have found out the “hard way” (no pun intended), that the dry ice will turn the ice cream has hard as a rock if left too long.

One option is to have the scouts make their own ice cream while sitting around the camp fire.

How to:

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup half and half

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar

  • 2 tablespoons rock salt

  • ice

  • 1 sandwich sized ziploc bag

  • 1 gallon sized ziploc bag

Directions

Add the half-and-half, vanilla and sugar to the small bag, seal tightly. Add to the larger ziploc bag, half the ice. Then sprinkle with half the salt.  Add the small bag and cover with the rest of the ice and salt.  Be sure it's filled to the top with ice.  Seal and shake...shake...shake!   10 - 15 minutes

Why powdered sugar? It dissolves faster than the granulated sugar. To make powdered sugar you simply place the sugar into a blender or food processor for a few seconds.

If you do not have containers to shake the zip locks in, simply use a doubled paper shopping bag or gloves.

Here are some other flavor ideas:

Add a teaspoon of cocoa to your bag for chocolate ice cream.
Add a tablespoon of chocolate chips
Add a tablespoon of toasted almonds
Add a tablespoon of cookie crumbs
Add a tablespoon of finely chopped strawberries (make sure to drain them!)
Add a tablespoon of chopped banana
