Whipping and Fusing Ropes
Whipping
When natural fiber ropes start to fray, we can use a method called whipping. With smaller string or twine, create a bite about an inch below the end of the rope. Start wrapping from the tip of the rope down to the loop of the bite. When your wrapping is roughly the same width as the rope is thick, slip the end of the string or twine into the loop and pull both ends tight. Cut off the excess string.
Fusing
When nylon or plastic based ropes start to fray, we use a method that is called fusing. Simply trim the frayed ends and with a lighted match or lighter, fuse the fibers together. Use caution as the melted rope will burn you.
