Shepard's Pie

When we were kids, mom’s go to dinner was shepard’s pie. The great thing about this meal is that it can easily be cooked in a dutch oven while camping.

Here is Mom’s recipe:

  • 2 lbs ground beef (or substitute ground turkey)

  • 1 can of corn

  • 4 cups mashed potatoes (instant or boiled)

  • 1 cup cheese

  • 1 package taco seasoning

Cooking on campfire coals

Brown up the ground beef in your dutch oven. When fully cooked, add the taco seasoning (we only use about half a package). Next, open your can of corn. Layer the drained corn on top of the meat. Your next layer is going to be your mashed potatoes. Smooth out evenly and cover with cheese. Place the lid on the dutch oven and cover the top with hot coals. Cook for an additional 10 - 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and golden brown.

Cooking at home in the oven

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Brown up the ground beef in a frying pan. When fully cooked, add the taco seasoning (we only use about half a package). Transfer the meat to a 9x13 pan. Next, open your can of corn and layer the drained corn on top of the meat. Your next layer is going to be your mashed potatoes. Smooth out evenly and cover with cheese. Place your shepard’s pie in the oven and cook for about 10 - 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
