Emerald Pools via Kayenta Trail
The Kayenta trail in Zion National Park is an un-paved moderate difficulty trail that will give you splendid views of the Virgin River and the valley. Our ten and six year old children were able to complete the just over 2 mile round trip without any difficulty. The trail is mostly sand / sandstone. Be sure to wear appropriate gear on your feet and take a walking stick if you feel like you need a little more stability while hiking on the slickrock. The upper pool receives very little sun light which resulted in the air temperature being cooler and a light jacket was nice to have on hand. During the summer months with the 100+ temps, this spot is excellent to cool off. Getting in the water is prohibited.
The alternate route to reach the pools is via the Emerald Pools Trail. But, due to rock slides and trail maintenance is currently closed. (as of our hike on 2/15/2020)
The trail is predominately up hill to the upper pool. Hiking back out is a breeze as you are able to take your time going back down the hill and enjoy the Virgin River cutting through the valley and the vistas all around you. Pack a lunch and enjoy the peace of the water trickling into the upper pool.
Remember: Pack it in - Pack it out.
