The Webelos adventure, Into The Wild, has us watching for birds around our neighborhood for a week.

We have a pair of mountain blue birds that live in the pine tree next to our house. It’s fun to watch them each morning as they fly around the yard. After watching them for about a week I noticed that they have some routines they go through each day. One of the blue birds will perch up on the fence and squawk at the cats to get their attention. While the cats are completely distracted, the second blue bird will swoop down and get a mouth full cat food and both will fly up to the nest. (I have no idea why they like the cat food so much.) Sometimes we can create an environment that allows us to see more birds. One way of doing this is by setting out a bird feeder full of seeds or nectar for the humming birds.

Keeping a journal of all the different types of birds is a great activity. And it’s always exciting when you see a new bird who’s colors and markings you have never seen before. Here is a free printable for you to keep track of the birds in your neighborhood.

Instructions on how to print into a book:
Print page 1 and 2, re-insert the pages into the printer in order to print page 2 of the pdf onto the back. (make sure they are facing the right way) Print page 2 on the front and back of more papers to make your book larger. Take the stack and fold in the middle and staple together from the outside.
