Ice Skating Safety Rules

With it being Thursday today, and It’s freezing outside, were going to throw it back to the 1976 Bear book and some safety items with ice skating and walking onto frozen ponds or lakes.

Ice Skating Safety Rules

  • Always use sharp skates

  • Skate only on approved ice surfaces

  • Never skate alone

  • Watch were you are skating at all times

  • Never throw anything on the ice

  • Never shove or grab another skater

Four inches of new ice is safe for a crowd. Stay ashore until its is tested an approved for skating. Ice is unsafe after midwinter and spring thaws.

Springs bubbling up from lake or river bottoms will prevent water from freezing. Such openings in an ice field are known as “air holes.” Streams, windswept lakes, tidal rivers, and salt water are slow to freeze and dangerous except after very cold weather.

Bushes, small trees, or danger signs should mark unsafe spots in daytime. Flares or lights should be used to mark them at night.
