Simple Roasting Sticks

I was prepping for a fall cookout over the fire and quickly realized that I did not have enough roasting sticks for the group to use. And buying 8 roasting sticks at $9.00 a pop was completely out of the question. So… being the thrifty Scoutmaster, I made my own! There is nothing fancy about these roasting sticks, but they get the job done. The following will make 8 roasting sticks at a whopping $1.25 each!

Shopping list:

  • 4 - 5/8” Wooden Dowels ($0.97/each)

  • 2 - Packages 15” Skewers ($2.97/pkg)

  • Glue

The Build

  1. Take your wooden dowels and make a mark directly in the middle. Cut and sand.

  2. With each wood piece, take your drill and make a hole into one of the ends for the skewer to go into. (I used a size 7/64 bit)

  3. Trim your metal skewer with either a small hack saw, snips, or pliers.

  4. Place glue on the hole of the dowel and insert the cut edge of the skewer allowing the glue to adhere the metal to wood.

  5. Allow the glue to dry before use.

  6. If desired, you can personalize your roasting sticks with paint or stain.

Be careful with the younger scouts as the skewers are extremely pointy on the end. Use with adult supervision… but that’s also expected with the fire ring. Stay safe, have fun, and happy roasting.
